- FADE IN:
- INT. MILLY'S CORNER - EVENING
- JAKE sits, slouched in his chair, soaking up the ambiance of the coffee shop.
- The lamp at the center of the table tosses a warm glow onto his dark red mug.
- MIKE sits across from him, twirling his pen, slowing inhaling the steam from his mug.
- JAKE
- Mango Peach?
- MIKE
- With a bit of lime.
- JAKE
- Mmm.
- MIKE
- Chai latte?
- JAKE
- Always.
- They sit quietly.
- JAKE
- Penny for your thoughts?
- MIKE
- Penny?
- Jake rolls his eyes and digs a worn coin from his pocket and slides it across the table.
- JAKE
- I was reading, somewhere...I can't remember now, that some ancient philosophers believed that in the moment a drop of liquid formed and fell, entire eternities passed, galaxies and worlds appeared, lived, and died. I think I've heard quantum physicists say the same thing.
- MIKE
- Ah, bull. And so what if that's true? How does it effect me?
- JAKE
- Isn't the idea of an entire universe within a drop of liquid pretty amazing?
- MIKE
- Eh.
- Mike dips his finger into his tea and pulls it out, holding his hand above the table.
- Liquid runs down the grooves of his skin and pools into a drop at his fingertip.
- The drop catches the light from the lamps around the coffee shop, and glows amber, reflecting tiny pinpoints of light.
- Mike and Jake's eyes are drawn to the drop, staring at it until they lose focus.
- Mike pulls his eyes away and watches Jake, who is transfixed.
- The liquid hangs lower and lower, and then drops, a thousand different reflections flashing across it's surface.
- It hits the table, exploding into droplets.
- Their eyes meet, and Mike smiles, barely nodding.
- FADE TO BLACK.
